Week 3

This week was a lot more of research work since my mentor was on vacation but I did arrange to shadow surgery with another doctor! I worked mostly this week on analyzing MRI images by segmenting the tibia and meniscus on special sequences of patients with meniscectomies. My understanding of anatomy of the leg is definitely improving trying to decipher which leg I'm looking and distinguishing different parts of the body. It was also cool this week to get to use a SolidWorks-like program to create testing grips for testing rat tendon. It was really nice to polish that skill up again since I haven't used it since senior design.

On the clinical side I wateched Dr. Ranawat operate and saw a cool surgery where they were fixing a malformed femoral neck and head by shaving off excess bone that was actually dying due to a vascular necrosis. And I also saw an ACL repair but this time the tendon was harvested from the hamstring and it was absolutely massive! They doubled it over to insert it.
