Week 1

I had the chance to meet with my clinical advisor, Dr. Weinsaft, prior to this summer immersion program, because he is a longtime collaborator with our lab. On Monday morning, I met up with him. After we exchanged our mutual recognitions, he took me to the reading room for MR and echo images. He introduced me to the other MDs and fellows in the room, and then we started reading cardiac MRI from patients. I was astonished to see the cardiologist at work, as he quickly arranged the images into a desired order, and then used software tools to conduct measurements on the images. He finished up by writing a report based on the measurement. It was an impressive display of how the combinations of technologies and medical knowledge can efficiently, and non-invasively, diagnose a patient’s health condition. On the second day, we continued to read the images. Then he took me to another MRI imaging facility at 55th street, where he introduced me to the MRI technicians, because I will likely work with them in the future. Then he told me that he will be away for the next few days, and I should read about T1 weighted MRI, for potential projects that I can work on, while he is away.
